Introduction to Judaism

Ask two Jews for their definition of Judaism and you'll get three answers. It's an old joke, but one containing a lot of truth: at the heart of Judaism is a willingness to ask old questions newly, including an inquiry to the very nature and meaning of the religion itself. This Introduction to Judaism course, ideal for newcomers or anyone seeking a deeper understanding, will delve into the fundamental tenets, beliefs, and practices that form the foundation of this ancient monotheistic faith, as well as an overview of how these traditions developed across time and the many locations where Judaism has found its diverse expressions.

About Hadar Cohen

Hadar founded Malchut in 2021, a mystical school that teaches direct experience of God through heart-centered spiritual traditions. Hadar teaches classes and consults organizations on spiritual and political matters including Ashkneormativity, antisemitism, feminism, and Jewish tradition. She received her B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Cooper Union, participated in an alternative divinity school, and is working on her MFA at The Transart Institute for Creative Research. Hadar was the first Jewish fellow at Abrahamic House, a multi-faith incubator for social change. She is the founder of Feminism All Night, a public gathering creating space for feminist spiritual discourse and possibility.

She is passionate about connecting the Mizrahi community in Israel proper to the Diaspora and teaching Mizrahi culture to the larger Jewish world. She has been a Scholar in Residence for At The Well and has served as their Lead Educator teaching Torah and integrating Jewish wisdom with embodied practice. Her dedication to Jewish education translates to her organizing work, cultivating multi faith gathering opportunities, such as leading a monthly Jewish-Sufi Muslim prayer gathering, and seeding the development of the Mizrahi-Palestinian Solidarity Network.

Hadar is also an artist, weaving prayer rugs, writing poetry books, and creating performance art films. Her most recent art show was on Prostrations– a compilation of fiber art, film, audio, scripture and poetry in reflection of Jewish devotional prayer practice. She was recently featured on Ramy’s (Hulu) “One Cup of Tea'' as a guest speaker (Ep. 2 & 10) and is a columnist at The New Arab. Her podcast Hadar’s Web features community conversations on spirituality, healing, justice, and art.

Hadar’s inspiration and dedication to her work arise from her deep roots in Jerusalem, her Arab-Jewish lineage, and her spiritual devotional practices.

Hadar is an Arab Jewish scholar, mystic and artist. She teaches spirituality and Jewish mysticism at Malchut, a mystical school teaching direct experience of God. She is a 10th-generation Jerusalemite currently based in Los Angeles.
